About Amity, Maine

Incorporated in 1836 and named after the 1794 treaty that helped settle early border disputes, the town of Amity sits right on the Canadian border in southern Aroostook County. Covering 41.7 square miles of land and home to a small community of about 250 residents, the municipality is defined by its rolling farmlands and Monument Brook winding along the edge of New Brunswick.

Like many towns in the area, it started out focused on farming and timber harvesting, but today Amity is mostly a quiet, rural place to live. An important piece of local history is the mid-19th-century Reed School in North Amity, a former one-room schoolhouse that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located along U.S. Route 1 away from major busy areas, Amity keeps a low-key economy based around small-scale farming, regional logging, and a peaceful, small-town way of life.
