About Bancroft, Maine

First organized as a plantation in 1840 and incorporated as a town in 1889, Bancroft officially voted to deorganize and became an unorganized township in July 2015. Located in the quiet, southeastern corner of Aroostook County, the territory covers 41 square miles of land and is home to a tiny population of roughly 55 year-round residents. The geographic character of the township is deeply shaped by the rushing waters of the Mattawamkeag River, which snakes cleanly through the center of the local landscape. Following its early settlement days as a small railway and river-based logging outpost, the community has evolved into a fully secluded residential and recreational retreat.

Today, Bancroft is prized as a peaceful haven where year-round locals and seasonal camp owners live far removed from commercial bustle. Positioned along Bancroft Road with a mail carrier route coming out of nearby Wytopitlock, the local lifestyle is deeply connected to the surrounding wilderness.
