First organized as a plantation in 1856, Drew officially completed its transition to an unorganized township in 2023. Covering 38 square miles of land and home to a tiny, tight-knit community of about 25 year-round residents, the territory sits tucked deep into the forests of northern Penobscot County. The local landscape is profoundly defined by its dense timberland and the winding path of the Mattawamkeag River passing right through the area. Following early growth tied to river logging camps and the Maine Central Railroad, the area has quieted into a peaceful, secluded haven for a handful of locals and seasonal sportsmen.

A unique local landmark is the Surety of Sinners Orthodox Mission, a Russian Orthodox church situated amidst the quiet wilderness. Positioned along Maine State Route 171 near Wytopitlock, Drew maintains a minimal economy closely linked to regional logging, small-scale woodlot harvesting, and outdoor enthusiasts who visit for quiet river paddling, hunting, and wildlife viewing.
