About Glenwood Plantation, Maine

Originally designated as Township No. 2, Third Range West, Glenwood was officially organized as a plantation in 1863. Tucked into the remote wilderness of southern Aroostook County, it covers 38.1 square miles of land and holds a unique distinction as Maine's least populated municipality, home to a tiny year-round community of just 5 residents. In its early days, Glenwood saw a brief spike in growth driven by regional logging camps and a short-lived incorporation as a town, but it quickly reverted to its quiet plantation status.

Today, the plantation functions as an isolated and completely peaceful haven covered almost entirely by dense forest. Located along U.S. Route 2A just north of the Penobscot County line, Glenwood maintains no local commercial center. Instead, its quiet landscape is primarily treasured by a handful of locals and seasonal camp owners who come to the area for traditional outdoor recreation, including deep-woods hunting, fishing, and trail riding.
