Incorporated in 1876 and named after Alvin Haynes, an early settler who operated a local store and hotel, the town of Haynesville serves as a remote rural community in southern Aroostook County. Covering 41.4 square miles of landand home to a quiet population of about 100 residents, the municipality is defined by its deep woods and the forks of the Mattawamkeag River winding through the area.

Like many neighboring towns, its early days were tied to military transport and river-based logging camps, but modern Haynesville functions primarily as a peaceful, isolated residential community.
