About Orient, Maine

Incorporated in 1856, the town of Orient sits on the eastern edge of southern Aroostook County. Its unique name stems from its position as the easternmost point in the region, jutting directly into New Brunswick, Canada. Covering 35.5 square miles of land and home to a quiet population of about 150 year-round residents, the community is heavily defined by its beautiful waters and shares a historically significant U.S.-Canada border crossing along the Saint Croix River, North Lake, and the Chiputneticook chain of lakes. In its early days, Orient flourished as a standard logging and farming community, but today it functions mostly as a peaceful, scenic haven for locals and seasonal camp owners.

A prominent piece of local heritage is the old U.S. Inspection Station built in 1937, which stands on the National Register of Historic Places as one of the first official border crossings into Canada. Positioned along the Million Dollar View Scenic Byway on U.S. Route 1, Orient maintains a low-key economy that revolves around small-scale logging, local services, and a steady stream of outdoor sports enthusiasts who come to enjoy the area’s excellent fishing, boating, and extensive ATV trails.
