About Orient, Maine

Incorporated in 1856, the town of Orient occupies a unique geographic position on the easternmost edge of Aroostook County, jutting directly against the province of New Brunswick, Canada. The municipality's layout and identity are profoundly shaped by its waterways, bound to the east by the Saint Croix River and the sprawling, irregular shoreline of East Grand Lake.

Historically a small timber and agricultural community, modern Orient functions primarily as a quiet residential town that experiences a significant population influx during the summer months. Locally, the town is notable for the Orient–Fosterville Border Crossing, which features a historic 1937 U.S. Inspection Station listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Removed from main commercial infrastructure, Orient’s economy relies heavily on seasonal tourism, regional forestry, and recreational sporting camps that utilize the area's vast networks of lakes and multi-use trail systems.
