About Reed Plantation, Maine

First settled in the early 1830s and officially organized in 1843, Reed Plantation is as a peaceful rural community resting on the southern border of Aroostook County. Covering 59.2 square miles of land and home to a population of roughly 125 residents, the municipality includes the unincorporated village of Wytopitlock and is geographically defined by its deep woodlands and the winding Mattawamkeag River. In its early years, the community flourished as a small frontier outpost, heavily driven by river-based logging operations and later expanding when the European and North American Railroad brought a station to the area in 1886.

Today, Reed Plantation functions primarily as a residential and seasonal retreat. A major hallmark of the area is the conserved Reed Forest, a sprawling working forest spanning over 30,000 acres that protects local wildlife habitats and supports the community’s logging roots. Located along U.S. Route 2A, Reed Plantation offers a relaxed lifestyle where locals and visiting outdoor sports enthusiasts can enjoy traditional recreation like snowmobiling, deep-woods hunting, and excellent river fishing.
